You can but there are some caveats. First, laptops and desktops use different RAM so they are not interchangeable. If you are installing memory from one desktop to another then you don't have to worry about the latter. However, you need to make sure if the memory you want to install is compatible with the computer. For example, my computer uses 2x 256MB 184-pin PC3200 DDR SDRAM which is compatible for my motherbroad's FSB (FrontSide Bus). The number of pins and the speed of the memory has to match those of my motherboard. There are several utilities available which will tell you what memory is installed on your computer. I recommend Lavalys' Everest Home Edition (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Everest_Home/1086844970/1

An alternative is to use Corsair website (http://www.scan.co.uk/shops/corsair/) to determine what type of memory your computer uses. Corsair is a well established company which manufactures memory. Go to their website and it will scan your computer for free. The process takes less than a minute and it will tell you in gory detail the memory that your computer uses.
