Not something you really need.
It's like a camper, hot tub, swimming pool, pool table, etc. etc.
It's something you can spend a bunch of money on. Then it chews up some amount of your time maintaining it. Often these things get little use.
If you are a person annoyed by mosquitoes, the neighbors barking dog, pounding sunlight, or having to occasionally rent a pressure washer.... skip the deck. Let the next owner drop $15k and perform the annual maintenance chores.

Decks are great for entertaining or just enjoying yourself after a hard day at work. Not to mention that they add resale value to your home and also make a great selling point.

you do not NEED it....
all depends on space and what your idea of a nice deck is,,,
some people think a triple layer[ three step is good] others just are happy with one large enough for a few chairs and a BBQ

It's a great place to entertain without having to worry about spilled food/drinks on your carpet/hardwood floors.
