A Yellow Circle by May Swenson

A green string is fastened to the earth,(stem)
at its apex - a yellow circle (dandelion)
of silky superimposed spokes. (flower)
The sun is its mother. (photosynthesis)
Later, the string is taller. (growth)
The circle is white; (aged dandelion)
an aureole of evanescent hairs (seeds)
the wind makes breathe. (wisps)
Later still, it is altered- (growth)
the green string is thicker; (aged)
the white circle bald on one side. (core)
It is a half circle the wind lifts away. (withers)
