how do I scan for routers with my laptop to get someone elses internet? once again, my laptop has a 54g 802.11b/g with 125HSM/Speedbooster already

Scanning to use someone else's internet connection may not be technically illegal, but it certainly isn't fair. They paid for their service and you should not steal part of it. The scanning feature that came with your wireless card is meant to search for public access points (like at Starbuck's), where you pay a fee to use it for a while.

Most of your neighbors probably use their own router software to restrict who can connect, so even if you see them you won't be able to connect.

Please think about what you are trying to do. Thanks

Yes - it is easy to scan for unsecured and secured routers. It will actually show up on your network card (go to control panel) It is not illegal. It is up to the party who owns the router to secure it (I can see 12 in my neighborhood alone - 7 unsecured (you can tell the technically inept)
