I think they spritzed it. On wikipedia there's a list of all mythbusters episodes; if you can find it maybe the information is there. Or you can post on the mythbusters section of discovery's website

Gives your clothes that "Eu d'Skid Row" cache. Doesn't do much about the smell of soot, though.

Spray it on your clothes before you wash them and it will help some
