I downloaded Excel software and I cannot open it on my desktop to begin work on it??

You may try OpenOffice.org instead. It's free. You can download it from www.openoffice.org and it can do everything Excel can do... even read in Excel files... and Bill is a Billionaire already... ;-)

If you go to download.com, there are several spreadsheet programs that work very similarly to excell. And many of them are free :)
