A content filter is a device use by businesses and schools for example, to exclude users from visit websites that are deemed objectionable or may otherwise interfere with productivity. These devices use a database to store URLs that a checked against when an outgoing request is made by the user. If the URL is not in the filter's database then the request is allowed through the filter, otherwise the request is blocked. This technology is used a lot by schools to prevent surfing to adult content and by employers to keep staff from browsing eBay, personal e-mail (Yahoo, MSN) and such.
