OK, I'll try a very simple explanation.
RSS is a way for web sites to publish new content. For example, a news site like cnn.com can put an RSS document on it's site and update it once in a while when new news items are added to the site. An RSS document (also called and RSS feed) is a simple XML file that consists of a list of items - each item contains a link to a new page that the site wants to publish, a title and a description of that page. In order to use RSS, people developed prgrams called RSS readers or aggregators - you configure such a program with your favourite RSS feeds, and it checks them once in a while for updated content, and usually alerts you (by showing up a popup message or playing a sound) if it finds new items. This way you don't need to go and check your favourite sites to see if there's something new - your RSS reader does it for you.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are digests of recently added information to websites. By subscribing to feeds, you receive updates when new information is added to a web site. RSS feeds can be aggregated (using an aggregater or reader) to allow you to see recently added information to web sites. By aggregating a number of feeds from different sources you can scan news, blog entries, etc. without having to go visit each site every time you want to check for new information. If you are a news hound and prefer not to visit web sites directly every time you want an update, then RSS is for you.

In relation to MyYahoo homepage, if you choose RSS, it will give you a summary of the page as it gets updated. For example, I have RSS for perezhilton, so I when the page gets updated, so does my MyYahoo homepage.
