OK so not just on this site but in the world at large, people are saying that society is well on it's way down the pan, human nature is failing, we have irrepairably f*cked up mother earth and that (if you are of a religious belief) the End of Times in close.

However I relaise people have been saying stuff along these lines for ages, perhaps millenia- so do you think we are all on a highway to hell, or is it just the old doomsday predictions never die?

What do you think?

Thanks!

I did not say I believe any of what I have written in the question, just that I have heard it said (in some cases word for word), and was just asking people's opinion.

I don't think the world is going to end, but there is no hope whatsoever for anything even resembling world peace. The reason behind this belief is twofold. First, the driving force benind a market economy (read: global economy) is greed; the quest to make ones SELF wealthy. Everybody must have a me-first attitude to 'succeed' in life. Therefore, the only people that have the time and resources to concern themselves with the welfare of others are those who are already very wealthy, and even some of those people chose not to do so (also because of greed). The second reason is because of religion, which provides for FORGIVENESS, not forgiveness from those who someone has wronged, but from...get this...an imaginary 'being' that doesn't even really exist. Imagine cheating on your wife, then apologizing to your uncle for it. Think your wife would feel any better? So, not only does religion provide for an easy way out when we act maliciously towards others, the market economy in which we live basically encourages it. Communism and the aboloshment of religion (all religions) is the only path to a peaceful society. :)

Sounds like you've been listening to a bunch of pessimists (Liberals). They see the cup as half empty, while conservatives see it as half full. What the hell is this f'd up mother nature crap? Do you really have the audacity to believe there is anything man can do to this earth that mother nature can't fix?
Thats arrogance on your part, to believe such drivel. And if you are not a man of religion, you probably don't know enough about what the religious think to understand the concept of "end of times". People have been saying the end is near for 2,000 years. And in biblical meaning, the end is not really the end anyways. There will continue to be life after those times come and go. The bible speaks of "everlasting life" not the "end of life".

I think most people in this world are lost until they realize we are not of this world, this is not are home, thats why I feel people are never satisfied with anything, because what there looking for is in a different direction and the only way to find our way is to realize this world is an intersecton where you can go the right or the wrong way, you can believe Jesus came and died for your sins, so that you can have eternal life, or you can keep on wandering around in an oblivion, that only goes one place, and you don't want to go there. But there are only two choices.

Personally, I think that if we continue like this we are doomed, but I hope there is still some room to turn around, because I'm not ready to die yet.
