Well... take it from an American. The football that you know and love isn't quite as popular here in the states as American Football. Good point made, it IS pointless that we call football soccer. I think America has a pride issue. We don't (as a whole) go nuts over soccer (football) as the rest of the planet, I wish we did, but we don't. I believe it's because we know we're not that great at it.
America only dominates the sports that we made up. And those are the sports that are most widely televised and merchandised, hence making them "more popular" than the world's sports. Soccer is truly The World's Sport. But, we must be stubborn.
Why do you think we don't use the system of standard weights and measures? We've got to be the oddball out of the world...

Beacause Soccer is A new Major sport in America and came after the introduction of American Football.

Because they already have foot ball. Technically speaking it should be the other way around Football (American) should be called soccer and soccer should be called football. Football is not played in alot of country but soccer is. Even they kINGS OF THE SPORT CALLS IT SOCCER i mean the brazillians.

America already had a sport called football. The word "soccer" comes from the word association which is the "A" in FIFA.

Because they have that stupid game that they call "football". How can they call that football, they hardly even use their feet? Personally, I think rugby is better than that, anyway.
And because football, the real one I mean, not the American one, is beyond their comprehension, they have to have a game which they think is as popular. But, it isn't, how many people actually play American football as compared to those that play football?

Football is a game that should be played by foot, however if we see american football is not played by foot mainly but with hand by carrying it so I think the name football for american should be change. No one is always right....You know that

They have their own sport called football...just like Ireland and Australia and plenty of other countries...
