I am currently doing a family stay in Brest, France (on the far tip of Brittany) and I am debating whether to tell my host family that I am gay.

Also, I don't feel as if it is necessarily their business, but I always feel uncomfortable when they ask me about girls etc. I've been out for 2 years now and I am not comfortable with the feeling that I have gone back into the closet

From my experience, vacation work in Dunkirk (Dunkerque) I had no problems with my work colleagues knowing I wasn't 100% straight roast-beef. The gay community was well established, with every tabaclerie stocking "le gai pied".

France, I've always thought, was about love and passion in any and all things.

You've had an opening to tell them ("Et les jolies filles?" "Non, je préfère les mecs.") and chosen not to discuss it.

Your situation is also different to mine - I stayed in a Hostel ("Foyer SNCF" - with several of my work colleagues) - I wasn't beholden to sharing a family's homelife.

I'd leave from telling them (you've maybe chosen the same) - unless the topic arises.

Yes there are ignorant folk "Eh toi! PD!" in France but, on balance, I wouldn't worry about it.

As far as I know, no - they are actually rather liberal when it comes to stuff like that. It is completely your choice whether or not you tell them. I would bet they already know or have wondered, but for the most part, the French in general are quite accepting of all types of love. Good luck!

I think they are pretty open-minded in most of Europe. But maybe you shouldn't tell them about your sexuality. It's not really their business. Straight people dont come up to you to tell you they are straight. There is more to you than your sexuality, don't let it overshadow you.
If it comes up, tell! But don't push it. You're just asking for something-something you might not want.

I've never been there, but I hear the French have a very "live and let live" philosophy. Why do you think they call it Gay Paree?

Are you kidding? Homosexuality started in France.
:P

Seriously though, that's up to you. You have to live your own life.
