yes, try GIMP 2.2 you can download it @ http://www.gimp.org/ it's not dat complex and works like the expensive Adobe Photoshop

Paint should be easy enough...
Open one image. Use the square shaped tool at the top to draw a square around it. Copy (ctrl +c). Close the image, dont save. Open the OTHER image you want. Click on the image and hover the cursor over the right side in the middle till it turns into an arrow. Click and pull the the right Then paste (ctrl + v).
You need two images of the same size of course. To change the size, fiddle with the scale feature. A percentage over 100 will make it bigger.

relies upon on the look your going for. for a preppy look purely smile, for the extra emo look take the image from upwards looking down easy as myspace perspective. for the scene look grabs some balloons stand outdoors and component for ft inwards wearing some thing bright and colourful

There are TONS of programms out there that out beat paint. try Adobe PHOTOSHOP.... it's my personal favorite, but if that's too complicated for you, try something like GIMP.
