c. transformation, in which a unicellular organism takes in DNA from outside and tries it on for size, is a way to get a new gene which may make the difference between survival or extinction.

I don't think it's d. I'd go with c - transformation is the process by which genetic diviersity is introduced into an asexual genome, and genetic diversity is a good protection against extinction.
