It is obvious that this man and his followers are all nut cases and also making money off of their hatred. It is illegal to physically harm them in anyway, although I would shed no tears if it happened. So the question is "what can be done to stop these people from spreading their hate?" "What can be done to hit them where it hurts?" Most important, "What can be done to stop them from disrupting the funerals of soldiers that have died for this country and our freedom?" just a note: I do not ever want war, although I realize sometimes it is a necessary evil. Regardless, I support the men and women that fight for us.

Well, here are a few ways:
1. Don't cover his hate-mongering on the daily news. The whole reason that "church" keeps going is because they get publicity. Complain to TV stations that cover them.

2. If you are at a funeral or event where they are present, either tell them how much their actions hurt and offend you, or stand in front of them with your backs to them. You have the right to do this from the 1st amendment, just like they do.

3. Support organizations, such as PFLAG, who work against discrimination, bigotry and homophobia. Support the same causes yourself.

I tried to limit my answer to things an individual can do, vs. staging a counterdemonstration and other things that require lots of people and money.
Thanks for your thoughtful question.

Stopping anyone who hides behind a church affiliation is extremely hard to do as they are protected to a certain degree by law.
Case in point, is that of Oral Roberts and his ministry. To refresh your memory, a few years ago, Roberts held a telethon claiming that if he did not raise some ridiculous amount of money by the following Monday, God was calling him home. He outright blackmailed his congregation into pledging the money for his self proclaimed ministry. Little old women across the country, mailed everything they had or could afford, just to keep this lowlife alive.
I am not denouncing religion by any means, and for the most part, I respect those who campaign on a wholesome playing field. That being said, there is no amount of money that can buy salvation. The greatest gift anyone can give God, is their full commitment to their faith, as long as that faith isn't corrupt.

When Fred Phelps dies (nutcases' father who began the church" we should protest at his funeral (won't be 300 ft. away, since its not a soldier).

I love this idea.

I think one day they will be yesterday's news. The news medias will stop obsessing over them and they will disappear since they won't get the attention they want. That is what they are out for-- they are not doing God's work. They want fame and attention.
