Metalman is right.

But if you are interested in race cars, BMW has only been using the 3-series platform for racing. In 2001 BMW was racing M3 GTRs in the American Le Mans series. Because they needed a street version of their race cars, in the same year they produced about 20 or so "street legal" versions of the race car that cost an estimated $250,000. They were stripped down of excess weight with a 4.0 L V8 stashed under the hood.

Now, given all of this, it would be cheaper to buy your own 3-series and have a shop install something like either the 4.0 or 5.0 L BMW V8's installed for a real super-tuner.

No, those are bought specifically through the manufacturers, or, more commonly, are modified by the race teams themselves to conform with the sanctioning body's guidelines. Each series has their own rules determining to what extent the car may be modifyed from it's stock configuration. There is no M5 'GT' sold at BMW dealers.

GT stands for Grand Touring. generally a Gt is more sporty then just the regular car. bigger engine, tighter suspension, that kind of thing.
