Art is the consequence of the articulation of things.
We all have an unique way of articulating things, and that way we express ourselves.
This is why art is considered a vehicle of expression.
Art is, to resume it, an articulation with a purpose that expresses a feeling.

I think the more appropriate question is, "When is art?" Art is whatever the people feel art should be at the time. For example, I don't think the Impressionists would acknowledge that the paintings of Annabelle the elephant would be considered art.

Art can be anything, it can be a picture on the wall, the way the rock hits the lake when you throw it, the sunset the sunrise, the view of a nice mountain top, art is anything beautiful that catches your eye and makes you look back at it, I can look around me and see art in everything.

Tough question - because I think that perhaps only time can truly judge what art is. Works that were almost universally reproached
at first may survive while others that were wildly popular may fall by the wayside.
So, I suppose "art" is what survives the judgment of time.

Art is something that makes a statement. You can agree or disagree with that statement, but as long as it exists it is still art. The whole thing with modern art is statements have become too easy to make and its impossible to tell the difference between one paint splatter and another. So now, art has become who can sell thier pointless peices of crap as statements better.

art is an expression of the emotion you cannot vocalize. When listening to a song, and it seems it's so beautiful- so beautifull that you want to cry for no reason. Like the song reminds you of something; scratching at the back of your skull trying to figure out what it reminds you of, or why it is so hauntingly beautiful.
When someone gets that feeling, from whatever it may be- a field of flowers; a church bell; a graveyard; something that happened to them; a dream, or whatever- it's a feeling that will drive you insane unless you can make that feeling inside you corporeal.
That's when the singer sings- loud and with emotion- because finally he/she gets to cast that emotion that was once so inexpressable out into the world, so that the cycle can continue.
It's when the painter starts coming to grips with that feeling inside of themselves, so that the nagging, confusing and haunting urge inside them can be realized, put on canvas so that they can look at that piece of themselves, (with the option to look away) instead of having it claw at their insides day in and day out.
That's when the writer, (who has been thinking in shapes and forms- thinking of something so important and inexplicable) puts pen to paper and fingers to keys, and lets loose. He only will be satified when he finally given form to that image in his mind he could not understand- and now (now that he has it outside of himself, on the screen or on paper) finally understands, and can share it.
Even if the song, painting, or peom/story will never be shared, and it only there in order to relieve the artist of that pent up confusion, it is art. Art helps the artist define not only their own soul and feeling and thoughts- it also helps them realize who they are, and what they believe. Often times when I paint, I end up with something I never expected, but the end result makes me realize that I actually feel one way about somthing, when I had originally thought something different.
That's why so many great artists go mad, or are come across like that. Even though their end result might be incredible and beautiful, they might still feel that the piece did not fully express what they were trying to get across. The great artists, (thos considered crazy) past and present, were perfectionistic about their work. They would have experienced that feeling of inexpressibility much more than normal people and lesser artists. And when they felt that they could not express that, and that a piece was less than desired, that feeling was still inside them, and that drove them mad.
Of course, many times when a portrait is commisioned, and it has nothing to do with 'the artists integrity' and is just a plain display of talent, it is still art. But still, I think people recognize great art that is the result of that madness. Like the Mona Lisa- I personally think it was a product of Leonardo's longing to be a woman (it's long been thought he was gay) Or maybe he just felt that he was a woman inside himself. That's why people are so fascinated by that portrait and not the hundred others created by so many artists over the centuries- it was a pure, unfiltered product of the inexpressable emotion in Leonardo.
I'm done, sorry for the long answer- I just have alot to say.;-)
