After a brief period of independence between the two World Wars, Latvia was annexed by the USSR in 1940. It reestablished its independence in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Although the last Russian troops left in 1994, the status of the Russian minority (some 30% of the population) remains of concern to Moscow. Latvia joined both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004.

**basically, it's a country in north-eastern Europe, and was once part of the USSR

i just waned to provide something in response to all this INFATUATION with ussr.
i sort of live here so here is a little bit more up to date [or rather sort of perpetual] view than the 15 year old "former soviet republic", so here's what latvians consider latvia:
latvia is a country in NORTHERN europe.
greatest influence on latvian culture and language:finnish tribes, germanic peoples [germans sweeds danes]
after collapse of russian empire after a century of their rule, at the beginning of 20. century baltic states and finland established independence and latvia became one of the wealthiest countries in 1ww devastated europe.
of course prosperity couldn't last long beside russia, ussr annexed latvia, lithuania and estonia.finland somehow maneged to retain it's independence and now they own NOKIA CORPORATION :)))
some 15 years ago ussr finally collapsed and devastated baltic states regained their independence.
latvia, estonia and lithuania set their goal-to make up for the lost time.
most important things are achieved baltic states have entered NATO and EUROPEAN UNION,what grants them security and economic support.
and things are really getting better!
most of the russians [esp. those from poor mostly russian populated areas] don't seem very eager to involve and for example are ignoring reestablishment of latvian [and estonian in estonia and lithuanian in lithuania] as official language and keep on "simmering in their own juice" maintaining high crime rates unemployment and alcohol consumption where they live.
most probably latvian will have blond, grey or hazel hair and grey or blue eyes.
latvian language contains many long vowels like in english words "steep, sleep, boot, bad".
woodlands cover 50% of latvia's territory and latvia has a long seashore on the baltic sea.
latvian kids consider skate or snowboard etc. coolest thing to do.
most common name for a man would be Jānis [yaahnis] for a woman, lets say, Līga [leegah]
i hope that explains at least something :)))
