Before toilet paper, there were cotton cloths that people kept along side a bed pan of sorts. They used them from about the time of the Renaissance until the late1800's, starting in the wealthy families. Your family may just have an old bed pan set. They were usually porcelain and looked like big salad bowls.

Some used leaves, some used sponges (Don't laugh. The Roman Empire's toilets had a selection of brushes with sponges at the end.), some used rags...and some actually used their hands.

Country people used corn cobs and pages of Sears Catalogs. Aren't we glad we didn't live "in the olden days?"
