I live in Ohio, we don't have a garage. Do I need to buy the optional hardtop?

The convertible will last about 3-5 years if kept outside and unprotected. Sun or UV causes more damage than anything. Get a carcover or if you have th option of getting the Optional Removable Hardtop, well get it. Best of both with that.
303 makes some nice products for keeping a top in good condition, but the fact is the threads and materials will only last so long. With good care a Top can last 10 years, easy.

They are built to withstand the weather however it wouldn't hurt to buy one of those weatherproof covers. They don't cost too much and since your vehicle is smaller it shouldn't be too much hassle to put on and take off. The optional hard top is more so for safety/insurance than weatherproofing.

you might want to. constant exposure to the elements will eventually wear out your convertible roof. plus, every time you open/close it, it puts more wear and tear on the material.

On a side note, it might be cheaper to put up one of those "temporary" car shelters, or just get a car cover.
