My guess would be that it is a result of the women's liberation movement in the 60s and 70s. Boys are now being trained to be sesitive to the world. You could also draw some blame from the big self-esteem push in the late 80's and 90's, where everyone was told they were special. Then they hit the real world, and their fragile, over-inflated egos burst into blubbering teary eyed depressed personalities.
also, "real men"...the insensitive, hulking stereotype is ridiculed in mainstream media, If you get a "manly man" portrayed on TV or film, chances are he's a beer guzzling, wife beating pig, and men like the gay guys on "queer eye for the straight guy" are elevated to idol status. Add to the mix the big push for gay rights lately, and chauvenistic "manly men" have no place in today's society. They've been over sensitized...educated out.

Most men are scared of being told "no", therefore they are afraid of rejection, just like most females. The men who are not "wimps" either have huge egos or they are oblivious (no araid of looking stupid). On a side note, I like aggressive women, it keeps me from having to make the first move.
