He's enigmatic. It's never explicitly stated where his home planet is, as far as I know, and he seems to be the last of his kind.

Yoda is the perfect magical hero of secrets and powers which does not offend or disturb anyone. The strongly religious do not recognize Yoda as blaspheme, the scientific type do not wonder if Yoda is a character that challenges their theories and final, no person of strong passions is going to feel attracted to Yoda because Yoda is not desirable to the human eye.
Yoda and Star Wars is all about safety. No one feels distressed about Yoda or any of the other Star War characters because they are easily recognized as both neutered and unrealistic or unloved like. They are safe. The core of our culture is ironically, an appearance of "safety for one and all".
What an irony Star Wars really is! Here we think of ourselves on the cutting edge of knowledge and wisdom, power and influence, but actually we are on the cutting edge of a butter-knife and an exhaust pipe.

It has never been confirmed by Lucas, but the species name for Yoda & Yaddle (Jedi Master from Epsidoe One) is called a WHILL....as in Journal of the Whills, which was the orginal title for Star Wars from the notes he made back in 1973. Later it was The Adventures Of Luke Starkiller....eventually it became Star Wars.....in recent years Lucas has decided that Yoda was better of left as Mysterous as possilbe, for one reason, he may make a movie someday about the early years of Yoda, and he doesn't want to be confined to some pre-exisitng back story.....

A wise alien Yoda is...! Seriously it's not mentionned anywhere per say but his name is derived from Yoga which is the base of a lot of his teachings...Apparently also from the hebrew alphabet ; the last 22nd letter is named Iota and it means the smallest! (which he is!)Bet you didn't know that hun!!!? Let's keep in mind that Star Wars is very esoteric beforehand and that's why I love it so much. Good question by the way.

Yes, he is a Jedi!
Did you see how bad the emperor aged during their force fight?
That's what happened to Yoda the first time they met. Before that, he looked like Smeegul.
Maybe he is Dagobanian.

According to the Star Wars databank, his species is unknown.
If Lucas didn't assign him an affiliation to a species, we as fans surely won't know either.
