The main reason why Football is not as popular in the US is because of money.
There is no $$$ in football. All the games aired on TV, get a ton of sponsors/marketing/advertising because there are many intervals during the game, like basketball, american football and baseball. But in football there is only one interval of 15 minutes during more than 90 minutes of game time.
Also, America already has 3 Major sports, i.e, American Football, Baseball and Basketball.
The game will only catch on once more money comes into the sport, so more colleges can offer scholarships and the soccer leagues can offer more pay, and this is all possible only if there is more sponsorship/marketing.

It will be popular if it is shown on saturday evening not clashing with NFL.
1. Well there is no $$$ to as the previous guy told. The TV cant show adds when the game is going on in football. In basket ball or baseball or American football they can show add.. which is a major source of income.
2. American hate the soccer. They think that its womans game.. and any good player is booed out in the field...
3. They dont have passion to watch the game... They hear a game named soccer every 4 years.
4. They dont have developed a good league as in europe. MLA is just infant here.
5. They dont even know who pele is...
6. the list go on..

Its so simple to play. You can play it on grass, graville, pavement, polished floor boards, and in the form of fooseball. Its continuous, no stop starts. Goals are scarce. Many people, especially americans say this is the worst part about the sport. This is actually the best part. In what other sport would you celebrate as much as you do in soccer when you score a goal. A goal is special. Its so beautiful to watch a team pass the ball around in soccer, its almost considered as art. Soccer is unpredictable. Unlike in sports like tennis and basketball etc. where the best team or individual on the day wins, soccer is different. A team can dominate possession, have 50shots on goal, hit the wood work 5 times but all it takes is for the other team to have one attack and they could win the game. But for me the best part about the world game is its simplicity. All you need to play is a ball. No raquets, no sticks, no hoops, no ice, none of the accessories that most other sports use. All you need is a ball. It doesnt even have to be a real ball. Kids in brazil often scrunch up newspaper and put it in a spherical bag and kick that around all day. Guys soccer is most common because we are more athletic, more capable. People say soccer is a none contact sport but this is nonsense. It is a very physical sport. Soccer is not popular in the US because it is not culture. In Europe, Africa, Asia, South America it is like a religion. America isnt really interested in sports they arnt good at. Also they prefer action in quick doses. Football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey are all stop start games with chances for commercial breaks and nonstop action when the game is playing. Soccer is a process of build up and tactical awareness which americans dont appreciate.

Soccer is VERY popular in the USA, just not at the professional level. There are thousands of kids playing organized soccer, from age 5 on up. But as they get older, there are fewer opportunities to play. I think it is popular with girls because they have seen the US Women's national team succeed. And there are laws that require equal opportunity for girls to have access to sports (Title IX). And Americans have lots of other activities and sports to compete for their attention.

I really don't know why. I am from the US and love soccer. It just hasn't hit the mainstream fans yet. We have had a lot of coverage of the World Cup so hopefully more people will start to watch. One reason might be that the league in the US is the MLS and there is no big name players in it.

it's probly not...as exciting for the guys. american football has much more contact than soccer. and plus we don't play it all the time like other countries do.
