You start lactating soon after the baby is born.
When your baby begins to nurse, hormones are released that cause your milk to flow towards the milk stores behind your nipples. This is called the "let-down reflex". Sometimes, just the sight or thought of your baby may start the reflex and make your milk flow.
And of for any reason you can't breastfeed, there is always formula.

they must use formula, their kids grow up insecure, perhaps they'll become strange, life will be difficult for them. Ask your doctor why you have no milk.

My ex wife was told by our doctor to have a 1 beer a day for a few days & that worked. It was wierd...
