If you're really short on cash, good places to start are discount stores (Walmart K-Mart, etc.) and thrift stores. Most of the major thrift stores, such as Goodwill and Savers, have lightly used scrubs in basic colors for only a few dollars apiece. You can also look around on eBay for bargains.
The most difficult scrubs to match are solid colored scrubs. If you are planning to wear a solid top and pants in the same color, you really should buy them together, and they should be the same brand. "Hunter green," for example, is slightly different from brand to brand, and it will look really ugly if your outfit combines two colors that are almost the same but not quite.
Patterned scrubs are nice because the pattern usually incorporates several colors. Wear solid pants in one of the colors found in the print. With some prints, your outfit will look OK even if the shade of your pants is slightly different from the top, but try to get as close as possible.
Before you invest in a bunch of scrubs, make sure you understand your employer's dress code. Some facilities require specific colors, some don't allow prints, etc. Also, pick colors and fabrics that are easy to keep looking clean and neat. Light colored pants often get dingy near the cuffs, as do white knit cuffs on some scrub jackets. Look for a soft, breathable fabric that has some synthetic content so it won't wrinkle and shrink like 100% cotton. If you come into contact with a lot of fluids, there are fluid resistant fabrics that are quite comfortable.
If you have the money to buy a nice set of scrubs, try Smartscrubs. Their clothing is very well made, comfortable, durable and comes in a wide variety of colors, prints, and styles. If they're a little beyond your current price range you can still put them on your Christmas list! www.smartscrubs.com

The majority of hospitals don't have any standard scrubs for nurses. In most facilities nurses can wear any scrubs they want so you find a wide variety of of colors, styles, and patterns. There has been a growing trend toward standardizing dress codes in hospitals in recent years. In some hospitals nurses wear blue, in others they might wear ceil, and in a few they might even wear white. If I had to go with a most common color when one is mandated for nurses, it would probably be some shade of blue (usually a ceil or navy).
