Good! This could be a great project.
An Idea of using a toy or a commonly familiar item in a project is frequently a beginning to a good recipe for an interesting demonstration. You have to discuss energy conversion (ref 1) and aspects of rotational mass or moment of inertia. (ref. 2). Keep in mind that the potential energy will be converted into kinetic energy however you will have two kinetic energies one of the yo-yo moving down and the other of the yo-yo rotational.
1.This project can demonstrate energy conversion from potential to kinetic and back to potential.
2.Discuss the moment of inertia and the gyroscopic effect (4, 5). Does angular velocity and diameter matter? What governs the speed of the yo-yo?
3.You can further explore the gyroscopic effect however the yo-yo may not be a good apparatus, but you should to so since it may tie certain exciting areas of inertial navigation and methods space satellite orientation correction.

Making something isn't really a science project. you need to investigate something.

Perhaps the influence of design on yo-yo motion.

Hypothesis: Modifying total weight and weight distribution (each side different) affects yo-yo climbing velocity and amplitude.

Just a thought.

yo-yo's demonstrate inertia, and gyroscope effect - rotating objects tend to remain rotating in the same plane.
