I currently have a PC running WinXP and an external hard drive with various files on it, including home movies (in .mpg, .mpeg, or .avi format). I'm looking at getting a MacBook Pro and am wondering if those PC files on the external HD would be recognized and usable on the MacBook (assuming the HD is FAT32 formatted)?

the .mpg will work with quicktime, .avi will work with vlc ( video LAN client) and .wma or .wmv will work with either windows media player or flip for mac ( flip for mac is a qt plug-in)

Quicktime can read MPEG files with no problem. It should also be able to read AVI files with no problem. Many of those formats are not PC formats. A Linux computer can read both of those with no problem.

mpeg and all the other files formats are universal and can be used for both mac and pc but i am sure about your mac would be able to read your external HD.

.mpg, .avi, and .mpeg file formats are not exclusive PC formats and will work fine.

they certainly will work, as long as you have software on the Mac able to view the files (i.e.: Quicktime, Windows Media Player [Mac Version])
