Don´t use that ball for him to "exercise" in, it´s bad for ferrets, it can injure their backs.
There are plenty of toys and games with to keep yor furry one intrested in.
Here are some sugestions:
- Big container boxes with rice or shredded paper in them. You can get big bags of rice in places like sams club, just make sure it´s not the instant kind, as than one would swell up in the stomack if ingested and might cause a blockage.
- baby toys, they have to be toys that dont have pieces that can come apart, I have lots of baby toys for them, like plastic key chains, rattles, those pastic chains, stuffed animals, jingle toys...I "rotate the toys" (put some away and leave other and the swith) so they play with them as they were new.
- tubes. This is a ferret must have! they love all types of tubes. You have ferret-specific that are either hard plastic or "retractable" there is even see-though ones.As a cheap alternative you can use those ventilation for dryer ones, they usually come in white.Open them and let them ventilate for a copuple days before letting him play in though, they usually have a strong plastic odor at first.
- Cardboard boxes, you can stuff toys in cut several holes, add several levels putting together several boxes....
-Use different scents. Smetimes I give them empty pastic comtainers of any food product thats over and they love to trag them around, dig to see where the smell comes from...last thing I gave one of my hobs container with this turkish thing that was made out of pistaccios and he went nuts.
I also damp a cotton with some scent and leave traces on the floor of the playarea, so when they are out they sniff around like crazy.
Also when playing with them with an old blankie/towel I just walk around draggin it and they jump on and off it.
Here´s an URL to an FAQ I made and has many useful links to ferret informational sited divided by subjects, I recommend you reading the nutrition section to make sure that what you are feeding your ferret is the right food:

Being trapped inside a plastic ball does not sound like fun to me either, does it to you?
Buy some "Linatone" (it's mostly some kind of oil) at PetsMart and smear a little on a tennis ball. Your ferret will soon love to play with it!
Another "toy" all ferrets seems to love is an old sock. Taunt him with it, and he'll probably snatch it from you and then take it and hide it somewhere. A big pile of socks is usually seen as a challenge, and will keep a ferret busy for a while.
Ferrets are smart and need something to keep them "busy" or they get frustrated and become mean or listless & dull.
Be good to your little friend...

Those are somewhat wrong. Ferrets should run around in the ball they dont have room to feel comfurtable and they cant go to a litter box if they need to go badly.

Mine loved socks. He would carry them all over the house hiding them in different places. He also got ahold of a windshield wiper that was still in the hard plastic wrapper and he would drag that thing up and down the stairs all the time trying to find a place he could conceal it all. Such a little character!

I have 4 ferrets and what I give them to play with is little dog squeaky toys. they love the noise they make. it has to be one that will squeak really easy though as their jaws are not too strong lol. But ferrets are very social animals so you really should get him a playmate because they are supposed to go in pairs.

What about something shiny on the end of a string or a fishing line? Have you tried putting a mirror in his cage?

What about 'pretzels' made out of pipecleaners? I know kittens love them. Or balls made of tinfoil? They are light and shiny, and easy for him to move around.
