I just opened the cd drive of this computer and put a cd in, and when i pressed the button to close it, it wouldn't close. i've been trying forever to pop it back in place or something but it won't budge. What is wrong? What can i do to fix it!? My dad is going to kill me when he sees this.

I tried restarting the computer, i heard it make a noise like it was trying to close, but remained open. So now what should i do???
Do I really need a new cd drive? How much do they cost? Please tell me what i should do!

Try to see if there is some LED (on its front panel) activity. if LED doesn't lit, it seems you've got a dead drive. you could also try to insert a paper clip (straightened) in the manual opening hole, but I don't think this will help, as the tray is already open...
possible causes: burned tray motor or its driver IC/transistors; fvcked-up gears; power cable not full inserted in its socket; data cable loose (unlikely); close button malfunction (dead/broke).
if it's only a CD ROM drive, it can be real cheap (less than 20 US$), but if it's a DVD or writer... you can raise up to 120 or more.

My advice? if nothing works, even if you don't feel comfortable about this, go to your father and tell him. he will understand and appreciate your honesty. and for crying out loud, rest assured he knows things broke eventually. maybe he can replace the $hit drive if it's in warranty.

Try taking the CD out, GENTLY pulling the drive all the open if it isn't already, and pushing it shut. It could be that your CD just got stuck on the edge of the drive and therefore it is unable to close.

make sure you have removed the c.d.
Pull out gently on the c.d. tray
Restart the computer
When you hear the noise start (like it's trying to close) then put gentle pressure pushing in on it at the same time pushing the button.
It might close

just push on the drawer lightly. it should slide back into place. if not, then yes you have a hardware problem with your drive. it's totally not your fault, don't worry. it happens. if dad tries to blame you, have him email me and I'll cool him off.

one consideration: only close the drawer by pushing when the button on the drive or keyboard is not working. making a habit of that can could cause the problem you're describing.

Did you try just pushing it? Mine does that some times and I just push it and it resists a little, but then tries to pull itself back in. Or if it tries to close, just push it a little to help it along. You might try checking to make sure the connections are all tight. Maybe it's not getting enough power.

If i was you i would keep tryin to push it back in. You might want to open your computer and disconnect the two cables that are connected to the cd drve. Then replace the cables and turn your computer back on. It might need to power up again by using that method.
