I have a fish tank which I have had for 3 years. I have 1 oscar in it, but I have never had a spot of algae in there. Should I consider myself lucky? Do I need it in there? If so, how do I grow some in my tank?

You don't need algae in your tank if all you have in it is an Oscar (since they are carnivorous fish). If you have any fish that feed on algae, such as a pleco, then you need it.

Unless u have a huge tank, you'll need a huge tank. Oscars need at the very least ninety gallons for one. They will reach 14 inches. They also need super efficient filter systems as they are messy. Hopefully you have that as its been in there for three years otherwise it is stunted. With oscars you don't need algae. You are somewhat lucky to have no algae, as it need excess nuetrients to survive. Oh and it is many fishkeepers bane so don't try to grow some

You do not want to grow algae. It'll turn your glass green and cloudy. It makes cleaning the tank a pain.
Be happy you haven't had it.
One thing is that a tank kept away from windows (sunlight) tend to get less algae. A good filter system will also help.

If you keep in out of direct light, and keep the nitrates down you will not get much algae. Also as I remember Oscars can take higher PH, and hardness which can inhibit algae.

you have the perfect place for a tank---be grateful- algaie gows light and ost people don't pay atention to where the windows and dorrs are i the rooms and they leave the light on the tank too much you seen to be doing excellent---keep up the good work

No you don't need it you probably just have a very good filter.
