By default, Windows XP places all your documents into a "My Documents" folder. Normally there is an icon for it on the desktop.

If not, that folder is located on the C drive of your computer. Click the My Computer icon and you should see a listing or icon for Local Drive (c:)
Click on it and look for a folder called Documents and Settings
Inside that you will find a folder that has the same name as your user name.
Inside there will be the "My Documents" folder. It will contain a My Music and a My Picture folder by default.
If you need an icon to the My Documents folder, right click on the folder and select "copy". Then go to the desktop, right click and select "Paste SHORTCUT" (Not just "Paste"). That will create an icon to the folder.

To prevent losing your files in the future, you should regularly making a back up of the My Documents folder on a CD or DVD. Then if your computer dies, or the hard drive has to be replaced, etc., you still have all your music, pictures, etc. on the CD/DVD.

If you know where these music and picture files are stored, find that folder, right click on it, and pick "create shortcut." It will make another icon in that window and allow you to rename it if you want to. Then you can drag it out of that window onto the desktop. Then, you only have to double click on it from the desktop to get to your music and picture files.
