The jokes originated when the Polish were the newest immigrant group.

Actually when people make jokes about other cultures it is only because they either dislike the culture or don't understand it...it is easy to cut up someone else or another culture...it is harder to respect them all...so most folks take the road of least resistance. All the jokes about the Polish being stupid or foolish mainly originated from and during the second world war where the whole country was overthrown in a matter of days. The polish were accused of being stupid for not being prepared....but lets not go there....I am Romanian, from the Province of Transylvania....I have suffered the brunt of many jokes.....I am just glad I am not from Tasmania....I am sure you have heard jokes about those folks and the Tasmanian Devil.......nuff said

People make jokes about all races and ethnicities being stupid; however, jokes about Polish people are currently considered "acceptable" by our society, while jokes about other races and ethnicities are considered significantly less so.

Plus, it's a lot easier to "spot" a person with a Polish ancestry due to their unique last names, and since there's not a social stigma attached to the jokes (as there is with other easily-identifiable races and ethnicities), there is little risk of offending a non-Polish individual with a Polish joke.

This also explains why Polish jokes usually work just as well when you change "Polish" to another race or ethnicity; the jokes themselves are self-contained, and aiming them at Polish people is simply the most acceptable means of saying "Aren't they funny, they're not like us, they're stupid" that we have in this day and age.

By contrast, jokes about other races and ethnicities tend to be very specific; that is, when applied to a different race or ethniticy than originally intended, they no longer "fit", and so are no longer funny (if they ever were.)

The Nazis killed all the Polish intelligensia (the smart people -- they did it because because they were Nazis). From that the Polish people got a reputation from which they never recovered.

Jokes about ethnicities tend to be quite specific. For example (a joke I invented myself): Why does it take three Puerto Ricans to change a light bulb? Answer: One to change the bulb and three to work on the car. (laughter) That doesn't work if you substitute "Polish guys" for "Puerto Ricans". Proof that Polish jokes ARE based on lack of intelligence.
