I'm not a mechanic, so are there anything where I can pay a membership fee or something to have my car periodically checked and maintained?

Your car should have come with an owners manual/maintenance schedule.

Follow the maintenance schedule per the manufacturer's recommended time/mileage periods. Some manufacturers recommend two different intervals. They say "depends" on driving. Follow the lower mileage/time period maintenance schedules and you should have a car for a long time!

There is a schedule of maintenance in the owner's manual. Join AAA, and they can give you more info as well as discounts. Find the newsgroup of people who own the same vehicle, and read the posts. That will tell you if the car has weak points. Watch for vehicle recalls on the manufacturer's site. Use good quality oil. Check all fluid levels weekly (oil, water, power steering, brake) and top off.
Keep tires at recommended pressure, and check once a week. The dealer's mechanics are most familiar with the car, and go to refresher schools.
Some new models can email you a diagnostic printout.

if u don't have the owners manual than i would take it to a well trusted Mechanic, not the dealership! they will rip u off every way they can! anyway have it fully inspected every 1 to 2 months for best results! my grandpa is 79 years old and did the same thing to his car!its a 1965' mustang and it still runs just fine.

You can contact your a dealership that carries your manufacters brand and inquire about thier maintence programs. These programs are often tailored toward your specific vehicle, and will allow the information to be tracked by the manufacturer, which could be beneficial for later resale.

Find a local mechanic (use referals) and take your car there every year for a tune up. Other than that, get your oil changed every 3,000 miles, keep it clean and don't abuse your car.
