First off . who is to say that Humans are the dominant species? And if Dominance is stewardship then humans are doing a poor job.
But as Humans are the apparent and assumed Dominant Species and IF they were gone today, then I think Plants would be the Dominant Species.

Only humans are dumb enough to confuse aggression with dominance. There is no other species that competes directly with us in the way you mean, waiting in the wings for us to screw up so they can 'take over'. Dominance is mostly a hierarchy issue within a community so that in an emergency there's no argument about who does what.
So I reckon it'll be some bacteria or parasite, or the roaches and rats can argue it out between themselves.

The dominant species on the planet might just be in the seas. The intelligence of dolphins and whales in a communicative sense may be unparalled in the earth.

Depends on how we're all gonna disappear...
If it's a nuclear thing, I'm betting on the cockroaches!
Other than that, I imagine there'd be a battle between carnivores (such as tigers and lions) and one of the larger ones would win.
Although there's a good chance that with humans gone, new strains of bacteria would come about and start killing off many of the new "top of the food chain" predators...

There would not be any one dominant species. The smartest would argueably be dolphins. But without humans, nature tends to have a way of balancing out animal populations so that no one takes over fully.

Depends on what you mean by "dominant." By most measures, humans aren't dominant now. We don't have the largest numbers, we don't have the most biomass, we haven't survived the longest, etc. We really only have the most brain power, and if brain power is your only criteria, I guess that would leave the chimps in charge.

this depends whether u mean in the food chain or in terms of existance
i believe animals such as crocidiles and sharks will be the dominant spiecies because they only have one preadator in the world today which is humans. plus they have all ready managed to suvive for millions of years
but not as long a insects.....
