Because really far left wing Libs ARE communists, and really far right wing Conservatives ARE fascists.
When a conservative calls a liberal "Socialist", that is accurate. The problem is that there is not a name for conservatives that are passionate about their beliefs but are not so conservative as to really be nationalist/fascists.
The fact is that there is a great divide in this country, and they can call us fascists, and we can call them commies all day long, but that will not change the fact that we are total opposites in pretty much everything we believe even if neither one of us are real fascists or communists, and the two (passionate liberals and passionate conservatives) cannot possibly coexist. I believe the only way this great gap will be solved is with a civil war unfortunatelly.
Liberals preach tolerance, but have little or no tolerance for christians and people who disagree with them. They talk about freedom of speach, and than take that freedom away from people who are just expressing what they believe (that homosexuality and abortion are wrong).

Jeff C. go read a history book. Just because you give something a name, like say Clean Air initiative, does not mean it is meant to provide for less pollution. In fact if you are a fascist you would allow more pollution and think that you are clever. By the same token, you could call your political party the National Socialists and everyone would think that you are socialists when in fact you are fascists. Fascism being a very extreme right wing political ideology which blends government with corporations, militarism, nationalism, use of scapegoats for problems, unitary executive, propaganda instead of news, etc... Did I mention that this resembles the direction the republican party is leading us.
Truth will win out, but it is the waiting that is killing me.
BTW Upon reflection it is my belief, based upon my observations here and in the US generally, that the name calling is mainly a tactic of republicans. Those "liberals" that do resort to this tactic are obviously frustrated with the hypocrisy they see, while the republicans who use this tactic use it out of hate because they do not have a legitimate rebuttal in the face of facts
EthanM: You obviously glossed over the actual argument to get to a point that is stuck in your craw; why? Truth will win out. I have no doubt in my mind...

Hmmm, so now we're calling ALL Conservatives, Fascist? News to me....I only call NeoCons Fascist.
Oh and what it means...it's a political philosophy that exalts nation and sometimnes race (class?) above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, along with severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition...
Yup, there's NO similarities there.....Oh and Jeff C? You're a dumbass...Hitler was also a Christian, does this mean he'd fit in well with the RNC? Where'd you get your talking points from? Ann Coulter?

maybe we should stop using pejoratives in general. There was a time when debate was considered healthy. Both neocons (a sad reference that is often misused) and libs (your misuse) get offended when someone wants to know the whole story and the complete truth.
Here's a piece: the REAL majority is neither Liberal, nor Conservative. It is somewhere in the middle getting beaten up by the liars and hypocrites from both sides. If there were an intelligent, honest third party, it would clean up because so many of us are so very tired of the garbage that the current two parties expect us to foolishly swallow.

Fascism:
A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
Nazi:
1. A member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, founded in Germany in 1919 and brought to power in 1933 under Adolf Hitler.
2. often Nazi An adherent or advocate of policies characteristic of Nazism; a fascist.
Conservatism
1. The inclination, especially in politics, to maintain the existing or traditional order.
2. A political philosophy or attitude emphasizing respect for traditional institutions, distrust of government activism, and opposition to sudden change in the established order.
Hitler was a socialist & fascist, both philosiphies are left wing. The diametric opisite to conservatism. Sounds like Hitler would fit nicely in todays Democrate party.

I know exactly what it means, and Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz et al. certainly seem to support a centralized, dictatorial approach to government (Bush himself stated to the media that its is a more efficient form of government), Bush and his administration have favored strict economic controls (not only domestically, but also with regard to interaction with other countries), he plainly wants to suppress opposition through harsh (and often illegal) measures, Bush is the poster boy for belligerent nationalism and his administration has supported racist policies in many hidden ways (while appearing on the surface to include minorities). Conservatives may not all be fascists, but their leaders certainly display fascist-like traits.

Do you think only people who lived in Germany or France, before and during WWII, know what a Fascist is?
You are right that Bush is not a Fascist, not consciously, but give him and his family and friends a little more time, and you to will know what Fascism really is.

It just seems that right thing to do. Repukes are so misinformed as to what liberalism really is that I have been posting this all day. Hope you read it and have a nice day.
Liberalism is an ideology, philosophy, and political tradition that holds liberty as the primary political value.[1] Broadly speaking, liberalism seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, especially of government and religion, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports relatively free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of minorities are guaranteed. In modern society, liberals favour a liberal democracy with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law and an equal opportunity to succeed[2]. Liberalism rejected many foundational assumptions which dominated most earlier theories of government, such as the Divine Right of Kings, hereditary status, and established religion. Fundamental human rights that all liberals support include the right to life, liberty, and property. In many countries, "modern" liberalism differs from classical liberalism by asserting that government provision of some minimal level of material well-being takes priority over freedom from taxation. Liberalism has its roots in the Western Enlightenment, but the term now encompasses a diversity of political thought, with adherents spanning a large part of the political spectrum, from left to right. In the context of economics, the term "liberalism" refers to economic liberalism, which is associated with the political ideology of liberalism itself.

Liberals have gotten into a mode where they think if they say something often enough or if enough of them say it then it becomes a truth. Since Fascism has a bad history they use the label without learning what it means.
