I sometimes like them. It is like an escape from reality and like you see how bad your life COULD be so you appreciate stuff more even though you know the soaps are fake. However, I have had many "soap moments" in my life! There are 3 programmes I particularly like and that's basically because 2 of them I have watched since they first started and the other is just interesting(that one's not a soap) and these 3 programmes are the only times I get to actually watch something in peace that I want to watch so I make the most of it!

Well...I guess it varies from person to person.
For a lot of people - it gives them something to talk about at school or work the next day. If you can't beat them, you might want to join them - if everyone's talking about it, you might feel left out if you couldn't join it.
Soaps can be addictive - like Y A!!
I guess some people have times in their lives which are uneventful....the soaps give them an added interest in life. If you are a bit lonely, you can feel a bit like you have a family - the characters become part of your life. (Scary!)
They are dramatic - adds a bit of excitement to a humdrum existence (oh dear!!)
The best reason I think is Catharsis - you can watch a soap and re-live something that happened to you and it can feel helpful.

Most people enjoy soaps because it's the type of world they would like to live in, while others just don't have a life.

I think its escapism,no one really lives that way in real life,they have lots of problems,disasters,murders, breakdowns,scheming and back stabbing on a daily basis
i know it sounds weird and it isn't real but if someone is having a bad time in a soap,it can make me feel a bit better about my life LOL

Because in the soaps you actually get to watch people whose lives are more messed up than yours is!

Because you get to get involved with other people lives and relationships, and we as americans love to do this. Sometimes a good soap can even let you forget your problems for a sshort period of time.

I guess it's a form of escapism - the British ones are full of doom and gloom which make people feel better, and the Australian ones are full of beautiful people. I watched Eastenders for about 15 years until all the good characters left and I got fed up watching ugly miserable people being horrible to each other. Can't really understand people who watch all of them, or tape them if they are going to miss them.

people like soaps b/c the soaps make their lives seem better and makes them realize that it could be worst. plus it's good entertainment. in my opinion.

I don't know why I watch them, sometimes I just want to cry and have someone hold me.. err...I mean... I hate soaps! Everytime I see one I smash my tv, HieYah!

sometimes they make you feel like you are not the only one having a crap time of it. or if there is a happy storyline they make you think well lifes not so bad after all.it's a bit of poke into pure fantasy for a while
