I got a dell sistem the hard drive crashed and don't let me enter, I bought a wdc put it as master but would like to scan my older version to see if I can acces it as a slave, Can I do it? Also how do I know where's the slave pin position?

To see what the slave pin position is you should look at the diagram on the back of the hard-disk, if it usses abbreviations they are: SL = slave, MA = master, CS = cable select. As to accessing the old drive it depends whether the problem was with the drive or the OS (operating system) if the problem is the drive formatting it may repair the damage.

You will need the Dell restore disks to reinstall operating system, Dell charges extra for these so you may not have them. The old drive can be used by setting it to slave while the new drive is set to master. The correct pin positions are usually labelled on the drive itself. If you have special cable select IDE cable then set both drives to cable select. Make sure the bios sees the drives in the correct position.

The pins position makes a great big difference! look on top or side or even the bottom of the new hard drive for CS = cable select SL = slave MA = master. you MUST have these correct!

Its located on top of your HD! Install the OS on the New HDD! than after u get everything working! try doing this configuration let see if i can draw it out for you!

::|: = Slave!
connect it like that!! It should say something on top of your HDD or manual!!
