How long has he had it? It is *probably* a shoe boil. I had an older TB mare that had one...on the floor of the chest right behind the right elbow. It did not bother her, never grew or shrunk in size. I had it removed - but it was more cosmetic and to keep her from hanging up in anything. It didn't interfere with the saddle. I'm not sure if this is what yours is. You might have a vet to check it just in case but if this is what it is it's not a health risk. It might be unattractive but won't hurt him.

The elbow is unique, in that it is an area that comes into contact with the horse's foot and shoe when the horse lies down. As the horse curls its leg up under itself,
the hoof comes to rest close to the elbow. Horses that have large heel extensions, heel caulks, high pads, or any types of additions to the heels of the shoe will potentially be putting pressure on the elbow area. When the horse lies down, the shoe can sometimes be folded under so quickly that the elbow can be hit with considerable force.
repeated trauma to the elbow from an elevated heel shoe results in a swollen irritated area known as a shoe boil.
Lumps and bumps in older horses is extremely common, and alot of times they are just cysts. However...any lump is worth having a vet check out because of the possibility of a tumor that only a vet could verify.

A capped elbow? http://horsejunction.co.za/information/articles/thearticles/Farrier/Graphics/capped_elbow.jpg Most often it starts jello like and then will get harder. 9 times out of 10 the vet needs to come and lance the area so it will drain. At times SMZ tabs are needed to be given to horse.
Most of the time it is cause by a horse wearing front shoes and when said horse gets up and down he hits the elbow causing irritation.

Probably a fatty mass of tissue, but since it could be mass cell and then spread, have the vet check it asap.

This is definitely a question for your vet. A lump behind the elbow can be anything from fluid retention to a hematoma to a tumor or abscess. We can't see what it looks like or gauge how it's changing over time. Please call your vet!

take him to a vet. it may just be a deposite of sum kind. or a lot of times when a foriegn object enters the body through the epidermis, the body builds a mass of stuff, whether its fat or calcium, the only problem is the object. so you get then object and massremoved, it mostly likely will not return.

Did you mean his elbow or his shoulder? It may be an infection or his weight could be off-balance. This link may help you. Also, there is an abundance of other good information elswhere on the site if the link doesn't tell you exactly what you need.
