This used to be true when Moth balls contained Napthalene. Napthalene is about 90 octane. 50 years ago regular gasoline was only about 60 octane...so adding mothballs was a cheap way to boost octane. Todays fuels have plenty of octane for modern car engines. Adding mothballs will be of no benefit.

Don't try this. It would take aton to make a noticeable difference and the result will be less than satisfying.Octane is thought of like this "HIGH OCTANE FUEL WILL BURN INSTANTLY AND LOW OCTANE FUEL WILL HARDLY BURN AT ALL". In reality the opposite is true , high octane fuel has anti-knock additives in them and for this reason they burn slower and longer than low octane fuel.Ever notice the octane rating of diesel fuel?Think of this a top fuel car runs a 110+ octane fuel (not alcohol funny cars) and from the exhaust you can witness a steady blowing flame as the car accelerates through the 1/4 mile. This is unburnt fuel that escaped and is being burnt off through the header if high octane burnt faster they're would no UN burnt fuel to blow out the exhaust and the engine would explode from detonation(fuel burning to fast(pinging)).. Just run the high octane fuel at your local station and save the grief of having to replace your catalytic converter.

Yes. BUT!! Be very careful!!! You can destroy your car.
Even if you don't destroy the car, you will most likely destroy the pollution control system.
