Ok....a lot of people are underestiamting Portugal, and I can't see why they can't do as much as any other team.
The round of 16 will be hard for Portugal because they have to go up against either Argentina or Netherlands...but look, Argentina ebt the Serbians 6-0 because the serbians are a bad team...so don't use that as a reason Portugal can't beat Argentina.
Netherlands would be tough too but Portugal has beaten them before (Euro 2004), so why can't they do it again?
Now, it's the semi-finals that are gonna start the extreame because the most probable opponent for Portugal will be England.
There have been multiple occasions where these 2 teams played..in a way, they are great rivals. But, the Portuguese beat them in the Euro (close victory but victory nonetheless), so why can't they do it again?.
Now, after all that, do you still think Portugal won't make it to the finals?

Thank you man for stating that out. Finally someone (apart from me) who thinks that Portugal can go reallyfar in this competition. You gave ggod examples lile the Euro 2004. They came 2nd. People are saying the loss at euro 2004 will affect. Damn well it will affect them. They'll want to win this time. The team have a mixture of both young fresh players and old experienced players. Plus they World Cup 2002 coach winner. Luis Filipe Scolari. And so far they've got 3 pts from every group stage match.

If anything Portugal are overatted, Pauleta sucks, Ronaldo and Deco are OK, and Figo is old.
Serbia lost 6-0 becaue 2 of there defenders were injured. Portugal will get knocked out in the 2nd round...FACT
As for Francis's answer, referees being swayed by "bigger" financial powerful countries is BULLSH**
Look at Euro 2004, England (richer than Portugal), got knocked out on PK''s when Sol Campbell had scored "the winner" at the end of regulation, but for some reason (apparently John Terry held down the keeper) the goal didn't stand. So if your theory checked out then the ref would of let that goal stand because the richer country would of won.

"Darius_B", the problem is that it is very difficult for people to conceive that a SMALL size country like Portugal which is not a major financial muscle in the world either, can possibly be World Champions !!! It is difficult to accept that a small country can possibly achieve something so big as being World Champions. Referees ARE SCARED of being seen as not backing large countries. It is safer for referees etc etc to decide against a small country. I saw in the Romania-v-Portugal in the WC of '98(?) Romania was very very very unfairly treated by the referee who favoured Portugal in that game cosistently... BECAUSE compared to Romania Portugal is a much more financially important country... However, when Portugal plays against a larger, richer country, WELL,, sorry Portugal !!! that is the answer. People say there is a curse on Portugal for 40 years BUT THAT IS LIKE SAYING THAT FOR 40 YEARS PORTUGAL HAVE BEEN ON TOP EVERY TIME AND... ARE NEVER ALLOWED TO WIN. Would we say for example that there could be a curse on Russia ? On Spain ? On Italy ? But these countries SELDOM win major tournaments. No... it must be that Portugal CONSISTENTLY is denied the fruits of their talent, again and again and again and someone is laughing !! Keep an eye on referees until the end of this WC and let's see!! I don';t need to see. I know... I have seen it all before !!!

Portugal has their main chance to win a major trophy in Euro 2004 within their own country. The main stars seems to have been around since they won the World Youth Cup in the 1990s. The new stars seems to intimidated by the old stars. Luis Felipe Scolari is doing his best to sort the problems the best way he can.

I'm not putting Portugal down. I do think that if they get passed either Argentina or Holland, that they would have a good chance of making it to the final. I would be more concern for the next opponet than England.

Well, you consider the history of their success, instead of their present status.
Look at Croatia, and possibly Ghana.
2 teams that have been hugely underestimated - they've played the best matches by far compared to their rivals.
There's no point saying "ah, Brazil's gonna win this one again, they've got the best team, look at FIFA World Cup 2002!".
You've looked at the history to consider the team's skill.
However, my opinion about them this year, is that they'll end up at 10th place, since they've played total 'crap' from the start of the cup.
You seen, you must analyse the present, and not the past to determine the present.

They understimated themselves. They had a very good team in 2002, and look what they did. Same thing with Spain. Maybe those teams won't choke this year.
