Prior to Final Fantasy VII hitting US shores, RPGs were relatively underground in the US, whereas in asian countrys, they have flourished for years, giving them plenty of time to tweak the system and figure out what they like and dislike about the genre.
Even today, most americans who own console games mainly play for sports, or fighting games, though RPGs are also popular.

In short, we're relatively new to the genre, especially compared to asian audiences who have come to expect a higher level of quality from their RPGs; not to mention that they have a lot more native folklore at their disposal to stimulate their imaginations with than we do.
Did George Washington ever battle any dragons or engage in wuxia battles over a war-torn land divided between competing dynastys?
