When someone majors in a particular subject it is offically documented by the school and there is a pre-determined set of courses and credit hours that they have to complete related to their major.
For example, if someone majors in biology then they have to take certain classes determined by the biology department of the school that add up to certain number of credit hours.

However, you will have to take "core" classes as well (i.e., english, literature, arts, sciences, math), but those depend on whether you are shooting for a B.A. or a B.S.
