You didn't say whether it is by trailor or tent, you will need one of these two. Bedding or sleeping bags, pillows, lantern, flashlight, matches, charcol, grill, campstove, griddle for pancakes or toast, eggs etc. , a refrig. in camper or else a couple of good coolers- one for meats & other perishable foods, and one for beverages so as not to have the food one open too often and spoil the foods. Garbage bags for garbage, dirty clothes, or to use as rain ponchos in down pours. Small broom and dust pan to sweep dirt and sand out of tent. Long skewers or green sticks for hot dogs or marshmellows on an open campfire. Also the wood for the fire. We camped where we could put up a small clothes line by our tent with clothespins for wet towels from swimming and to air our sleeping bags, which sometimes were a little damp feeling. Don't forget a tarp to lay on the ground before the tent to keep the sticks and other things from punching holes in your tent. Also tent stakes to hold the tent down in the wind. We always took dish pans, tea kettle, and dish soap, rags and towels as we did our own cooking and dishes. We had 1 saucepan, 2-3 skillets, utensils, dishes, coffee pot, cups, paper cups, plates, 2 paring knives, pot holders. Don't forget the aluminum foil, this is very essential. We always had 3 outfits, plus cooler weather outfit, jackets, swim wear, towels, bug lotions-sprays, sunscreen, first-aid kit, emergency radio for weather reports. a wipeoff table cover, lawnchairs. We used to go every year with my sister's family and we set up a regular kitchen and campsite. Later as our sons got older we took their bikes also. We always had float toys, etc. we also took cards and games for real rainy days. We had many fun adventures. As you will no doubt make with your family also.

Don't go crazy and buy everything in the camping section of the sporting goods store. Most of that stuff you will never use. I also recommend you start with borrowed and used gear so you get to know about a product before buying. I have found real good stuff used once at garage sales.
If you are camping in warm dry weather your needs are much less than if it rains a lot or if it's going to be cold. Tent, sleeping bags, mats, etc. if you just occasionally camp for a weekend cheaper stuff will do you. If you are going for long periods you really need to get the quality gear. Don't overdo the cooking stuff, most rookies do. Change your meals to use just a few items, skillet, pot, spatula, etc. I usually just take stuff from home for car camping but backpacking you will need special lightweight gear.
GORP is the best website on the net for campers and hikers in the US. Sections on gear plus guides and reviews on every camping spot or hike you can think of.

You should be specific about the kind of equipment that you need in order to get helpful answers. Many items can be purchased easily on-line. Some gear, you should go to an outdoor recreational equipment shop to test for fit and compare with other products. There are items that you can buy cheap, others that you probably would be better-off buying high-quality that will last for years or will serve you better than the cheap stuff from department stores. In my area, there are many outlet stores for popular brands of gear with deep discounts because outdoor activities are very popular. In areas where I have lived years ago, there were no high-quality gear shops and prices were very high at the limited shops that existed.

I like my camping very primative. I bring basically no supplies other than me and a swiss army knife. I prefer the knife with the saw and I don't like it overloaded with tools. If I were going to get lasvish the following suggestions are good. A book on wilderness survival training and on edible wild plants is essential. Also some 100% deet insect repellent is a good choice to ward off ticks, chiggars(evil), and mosquitos. CB radios are good too where cell phone coverage is spotty. Last never forget sunblock and water filtration devices or pills.

Check out REI.com then hit the outlet button tab on top. This is where last years gear and stuff goes on closeout. Sometimes you can get great deals! Also see if you have an Army/Navy Surplus in your area. They are great options too.

tent
cooking equipment (inc. utensils and pots and pans)
bladders (these can hold water or beverages)
Water purifier (if camping near water, one of these can solve the problem of lugging extra lbs. of water)
first aid

North Face makes good stuff. Dont buy wal-mart's generic brands - you get what you pay for.
