I'm not sure where you heard that but it is not true.
It started with the Battle of Fort Sumter.

I must apoligize for my ignorance....
Conditions do not start wars. Acts start wars. You could also argue that the civil war was started by abolitionist who for very noble , godly and "American" reasons put pressure on Northern Businessmen to act upon the congress to help their antislavery argument with a business argument. By the way, It cost more to keep a slave healthy than it did to feed and house a 3 person family of northern workers, So the average Southern plantation owner was actually paying much more per slave than his Northern counterpart was for his worker.
Your argument is discusting and shows just how deep the conservative agenda has eroded our schools. You are actually trying to "change" history.
The civil war was started when they fired cannons on Fort Sumter.
The NORTH benefited from Slavery . Northern cities were overcrowded with workers from Europe. If the South had freed the slaves then Northern whites would have come south and takin the jobs of those former slaves which would increase the wages of the Northern workers who now would have been in high demand which would have made the Northern business owners very angry with the South. Wait please.......
I must apoligize for my ignorance....
That actually happened after the civil war and again after reconstruction. Northern whites took jobs blacks were making inroads to. The small increase in manufacturing jobs in the South and the middle Atlantic in the 1880's was quickly taken by Northern whites who moved South which along with western expansion of all whites created a new surge in white immigration in 1890's and for the next 30 years.
But you think the Civil War was started by Northern Businessman.....Wow!!!

No, actually the civil war was started by Northern factory owners. The South got tired of having to pay enormous amounts of money to get the textiles shipped back to the South after they sent their cotton North for cheap prices. The South had started to ship some of their cotton to European countries and were in the process of building their own textile mills. The Northern owners couldn't compete because they had to pay their workers; whereas, the South used slaves. So, they took up the banner against slavery to force Lincoln to arm against the South.

There were "guerillas" from both north and south in MO and KS during and before the civil war. But what started the war was Virginia ceceding from the union then shelling Fort Sumter.
