It seemed to me that in the old comics, whenever Supes was in a jam(no matter how trivial), he'd just make up a new power to help him out of it, even if it was a total cheat. Then he'd never use that power again.
For example: http://www.superdickery.com/stupor/2.html
Has DC stopped cheating yet? :)

Ok, here's one: 'Super-Ventriloquism"? WTF is that?

I'd hate to sound like a geek... but here it goes:
Post-Crisis Superman (1986 revamp by John Byrne/ Lois and Clark version ).
Invulnerability (nearly indestructible ), there is an aura that surround his body that prevents dirt or grease from adhering to his skin ( in a blazing inferno, superman's suit will be left virtually intact, except for his cape), Super speed and flight (can move 3 times the speed of sound ), Super enhanced senses: Telescopic, Microscopic, X-ray, Infra-red, and Heat vision, Super efficient lungs ( can hold his breath for an extended amount of time, but ultimately needs O2 to survive ), Super Hearing and Smell, Super strength ( his strength seems to be infinite, but he does has his limits ), Highly efficient brain ( he can think and react and come up with several solutions in seconds: this does not mean he is super smart! ), and last but not the least, Super breath. Damn... I gotta get a life!

Supey always had a great mind. He's using his quick mind to complete that problem.

As for powers, the older comics had a general concensus of the invulnerability, strength, xray and heat vision as well as heightened senses (hearing, sight, taste, etc.) They were very good at using these powers to the finite level. I don't think i ever saw them "cheat".

Superdickery owns! I think these days there is a consensus between the writers as to what each character can and can't do, but there were some strange things went on back in the day.

Jeffrey Alva is right, though he forgot super mathematics, super ventriloquism, and now in the movie I think he has some kind of super homosexuality.

It's not that he makes up new powers, it's that sometimes he uses them more creatively than others. Even Superman gets bored sometimes.
