I would get a list of award-winning children's books and emphasize how your student has a remarkable advantage to be able to study some of the world's greatest literature for children. People have to go to college to take juvenile literature classes. I know, because I took a class like that at Utah State University. Perhaps your adult student needs to see what kind of books there are to choose from. For example, there is a wealth of Jewish children's literature that also teaches about things like the Holocuast, such as "The Devil's Arithmetic" by Jane Yolen, which I would say is on a fifth grade reading level. Or if your adult student knows English as a second language, you can get into more of the books aimed at presenting other cultures. Another possibility is to work on creative writing skills - which helps anyone at any level of reading learn how to read and put language together better. There are beginning creative writing classes offered by community resources, so again you can emphasize how privileged your student is to be able to learn about creative writing without having to attend a separate class. Lately I have been writing puppet show scripts for children, and all my poetry in the past few years has an emphasis on language which is easy for children and teenagers to understand, which means my audience will be that much broader. Perhaps your student has some hidden talents with working with children, and whatever her level is, that is a hidden strength. Sometimes what people think is a weakness is really a source of great appeal to others. Good luck.

I would suggest ,go to your nearest Community College, Adult Learning Center and asked them for advice. Many of the Centers have Learning Material for Adults with Low or know Reading Level which are not child based.
Good Luck

Hi! I work at a library, and just typed in the search term "adult illiteracy" and here are a few of the titles I came across:

1.) "New technologies for literacy and adult education : a global perspective"
by: Wagner, Daniel A. ISBN: 9236039863

2.) "Adult literacy assessment tool kit "
by: Knell, Suzanne ISBN: 0838935028

Check it out, I am sure they have them on amazon; try your local public library, or do some general searches on amazon for more books on the subject. Hope this helps!

Some newspapers, especially the tabloid type that are published in larger cities, are written at 5th grade reading levels. Have you got something like that available to you?
