I am looking to do my house carpet thinking it may be cheaper than buying new. I don't want to have to worry about odor or the dye coming off on your clothing if you are laying on the carpet or anything like that though. Thank you ahead of time for your answers!

Way too much work, and too much of a hassle. Your best bet is to seriously just go and get the carpet of the color of your choice. You'll end up finding that dying it would be a total pain in the a$$, too much work, then too much clean up, and the smell.. YUCK.

Trust me, you'd be better off just getting new carpet.

Even if you have professionals dye your carpet there is considerable expense. Also, since this is not a common everyday service carpet companies perform, who is trained to do it? Then there are the issues of color/dye transfers. I totally would not recommend it. It is not cheaper than new carpet.

Not recommended. many of the Rit dyes that you purchase are of poor quality. As a carpet technical guy (MANUFACTURER) I would never attempt it myself without special after market dyes designed for carpet. Rit works great on T-shirts...that is until you start walking on them

I am not sure if you wouldn't get the dye on your clothes or furniture. But you check HGTV.com
