Long ago, the Ottoman empire ruled al of the Middle East. All at once, the empire crumbled very quickly, leaving no successors. When you have a single ruler over wide lands and that ruler dies, everybody that can swing a sword is going to try to grab as much land and power as he can get. The result - a varied group of what basically amounts to warring tribes squabbling over every little piece of land.
Today, they are still without any sense of unity, all because of those darn Ottomans. Nobody wants to let anybody else touch their precious little parcel of land or anything on it.
