is it possible to send a fax from an all-in-one via the internet? do I need specific software for this? does it depend on the all-in-one's capabilities?

A fax line is always a land line

Faxing via theinternet has nothing to do with having actual fax hardware, you need an internet fax service (which will cost money).
If you wish to use an actual fax device, like a fax modem or an all-in-one device, you must have some kind of land line (or like myself, a box that gives me a land line via my TV cable...which yes, you have to pay for as a copper pair alternatve)

if it's really an all in one, there is phone connection in the back and you can send your fax through that one.

If you don't have it or can't use it there are software and services to use the internet to send a fax.

there are companies that have a gateway, so you send them an email and they send it as a fax through their land line to the fax number you requested.
So you may be able to use your all in one as a scanner and send them a pdf that they can fax.
You may find some free limited services, but most services like that will be either per subscription or per fax.

try companies like efax.com

If you have an PSC (all-in-one) without a land line, the short answer is no. However, most PSC's have some sort of "copy to file" program included in the software provided to you by the Mfr.
You could utilize this to copy the page(s), to your hard drive (i.e. "My Documents"). You could then, send these pages as an email attachment to the recipient and vice versa - Both you and the recipient could then sign (fill-in info, etc) and print these documents, just like a fax.

Sorry... at this point in space and time any faxing device requires a land line.
