Well for the first part of your question, if you don't wake up by an alarmclock or something, you will wake up when it's the natural time for your body to wake up.
There is a pattern in our sleep. In a night sleep we go through periods of sleep. We start with REMsleep, that is fase 1, and go through fase 3 and 4 to our deep sleep. After 4 we go back via 3 and 2 to 1, REMsleep.
(REM means Rapid Eye Movements and in that fase you will have the most vivid dreams)
That is 1 period. We have 4 to 5 each night.
In your normal rythm you wake up after REM, that is also why we can recall our dreams the best when we awake naturally.
If you wake up by something else, it disturbs the pattern. You might wake up directly from deep sleep, and feel more tired.
If you didn't have enough sleep, your body needs the most to recover from having missed REMsleep. Hence, you will dream more that night and the first REMstage will be longer then it normally is.
As for the question of why we can sleep all day: actualy to recover from a lack of sleep doesn't mean that we need to sleep more.
Often you see that sleeping a lot is a something from our selfdefense mechanism. It is mostly a psychological thing in which you are trying to avoid to deal with problems or reality. It's (consiouss or unconsiousness) escapism. Most people who sleep al day (not just one day, but as a pattern) have dufficulties to deal with life on that moment. It can be a sign of depression.
(the word 'period' I might use wrong, I can't find an other word.. sorry, I am not native English speaking so my vocabulary is not that big. I guess you will know what I mean anyway. ;-) )

Sleeping disorders cause this as does depression. I personally can't sleep for more than 4 hours at a pop so I do things in between to tire myself out. I don't know why I do this, I have just adapted to it. And so far, no sleeping aid has helped me either. People who are depressed don't want to face life and sleep allows them to hide from it. Humans are odd and different, that is what makes us what we are. If we were all the same, we would be sssssssssooooooooooo boring!! Good question!!

Sometimes your body doesn't rest properly during sleep and so needs adittional rest. Also activities you engage in during the day may of course cause to become tired again. You mau also feel the need to sleep during the day if you haven't slep enough last night or even sevral nights before that.

If you don't get enough sleep the day before or you dont get enough vitamins or whatever .. so many different reasons to feel bad and tired. If you are run down you need more sleep to recharge.
