OK. First of all, like I work in a tech shop so I can say more than, oh, I heard dell is good. I'm sorry, but Dell has like some of the crappiest warranty service I've seen out of any manufacturer.
A lot of times, like if something breaks, you have to have it like shipped out to the east coast, and guess what? You pay for the shipping!
There have been like sooo many people that have brought there Dell computers into us, simply cuz they didn't want to deal with the warranty stuff. And not just older computers.. like a couple months ago there was a brand new XPS machine in for service.
As for as laptops go, stay the heck away from Toshiba. They always have issues with overheating or the connection between the AC adapter and motherboard. If you're not under warranty, a new AC adapater costs around 150 dollars. A new motherboard (most ppl don't just replace components) will cost 400-1000 dollars, and 400 is like very rare.
IBM and Sony are.. meh. They have just as many issues as any other brand, but you're paying for the name on your laptop if you ask me. The exceptions are like the new Sonys that are like so light and sexy. It's hard to find another manufacturer that can give you the same kinda product. Bottom line: price will be higher.
Apple laptops are nice. They don't brake that often and most of the time the issues aren't too major. What I've seen the most was the KB being replaced. 150-200 again.. I would stay away from the Intel cores tho, simply because that's where you're going to get the new "apple" viruses. One of the strengths of a mac is not having to like worry about it all the time, and if ya ask me, getting an intel core mac is kinda self defeating.
An apple tower PC though... steer waaay clear. I've seen like so many cases where huge repairs are necessary that just aren't worth the cost imo.
Fujitsu.. I know a few people that have one, and they like it *a lot*, but I've only ever seen two come in like where I work. It could be cuz they're dependable, or just cuz no one buys them.
Acer, no. I see way too many. I would say Dell and Acer come in the most.
I'd probably end up like buying an HP or Compaq (same company), just cuz the price is about average, and customer service isn't horrible. If you can get an extended warranty from the store, ask like if it has software support, (if ya need it), screen replacement, or battery replacement. Most people will need to replace their batteries if they travel at all after about a 1-1 yr 6 mos. Those are again in the 150-200 price range. A lot of times if the store warranty covers that, it like already payed for itself. You also wanna ask about accidental coverage. Most ppl won't cover water damage or like.. if you run over it with your truck.
Good luck and have fun with your new laptop. =D
Ah I forgot to say.. when ur like under the first year since you bought your laptop (still under manufacturers warranty), the laptop 9 times out of 10 will be sent out for repairs. The maker of the laptop is always very picky about who can touch the insides of it without voiding your warranty.
Recently HP and Compaq have authorized some repair centers to do repairs on - site that don't involve screens, CPUs, or motherboards. That's still not a lot, so if something bad happens, know you're gonna be without it for a while.

Dell is the best computer and is built to last, every last touch is added on to make the computer better, If you are looking for entertainment, you may want to check out Toshiba. Beware of HP, because usually something malfunctions after the warrenty is over. Try some links here: http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=laptops&hl=en&btnG=Search+Froogle

Every manufacturer has it's glory and horror stories.
It's best to simply decide what you NEED the laptop to do, and by that, decide what it must have in it.
From there, compare similar laptops, and grade them on price, weight, screen size, durability, battery life, and things like that.
Then simply make the best choice for your needs and budget!
Happy Hunting!

it depends on what your using it for. sony is good, but expensive. just dont get compaq because their customer service really sucks and so do their computers. dell has good computers at reasonable prices. i looked at the ads in my sunday paper for Best Buy and they had Gateway laptops and Sony laptops. Sony was like $1,249 and the gateway was $1,019 and the Gateway had everything the sony one did, plus it had more memory and more features.
